ROYAL HUNT (Denmark - Sweden - USA)
This might sound a little clichéd, but if this international band from Copenhagen
wouldn’t exists, someone would have to make it up even if only to prove that the Russian-language rock school of 1980s actually exists
(not "Russian rock")! And as we can see, this school brings success to the band not only in Russia, but also in places with much more traditional
tastes in electric music like Japan, USA and continental Europe.
Actually, we can admit that Royal Hunt is not only “big in Japan” but
also “big in Russia”. Under the leadership of our ex-fellow countryman Andre Andersen (composer,
multi-instrumentalist and a producer) in the past 10 years the band became one of the very few bands with a name known all around the world
which regularly perform both in and outside of Russia’s capitals. Hence the constant anticipation: what will Royal Hunt bring to us this time?
This time the band performs in Russia as a part of its European tour to promote the last year’s studio album "Devil's Dozen". At the same time,
the band promotes its double album "Cargo", a compilation of band’s performances during 2015 fall festivals "ProgPower USA" in Atlanta and
"Loudpark Festival" in Japan. This album’s European release is planned for March 18.
The current make-up of the band with the American vocalist D.C. Cooper does not seem to be such a sensational reunion any more – the
discussions of the 2011 tour with its classical material have died out and D.C Cooper has three albums recorded during this “new era”. However,
D.C. with his “golden voice” is r still rather adored by a respectable number of fans. Members specialized press still consider the 1990s albums
recorded with D.C., such as "Moving Target" and "Paradox” and impressive concert albums 1996 and “"Paradox: Closing The Chapter” to be the best of the band’s work.
While the last three tours introduced a new talented young guitar player Jonas Larsen about whom Andre Andersen
once said: “Royal Hunt finally found its very own Ritchie Blackmore!” The current tour will also introduce a new face in the band. The drummer
Andreas “Habo” Johansson ended up in the band thanks to a recommendation of his old colleague, bass-guitar player Andreas Olsson
from the Swedish “Christian metal” band Narnia.
Yet again Royal hunt will strive to succeed with a rather broad audience by relying not only
on nostalgic feelings of the old fans, but also by playing new material. "Devil's Dozen" material has been already tried out in a concert environment
during the mentioned earlier music festivals and it’s “live” performance was highly appreciated. And one more significant detail: according to
Andre Andersen “Devil's Dozen” is a true mainstream album. Its music will appeal both to the hard-rock fans and to the usual audience who
Simply enjoy good melodies. We could even say this album is provokingy normal and compositions such as "May You Never (Walk Alone)"
And "Way Too Late" shows well what makes Royal Hunt special. That is a combination of perfect melody and inner dramaturgy of the composition
That comes from the Russian-language rock school and understandable for so many (not only Russian) listeners. Royal Hunt’s new songs
that will be presented during the tour is an example of that evolution that could have happened to the Russian rock music as if
it wasn’t so heavily influenced by those who valued the rule of lyrics over the music originality, mastery, energy and emotional drive of the music.
Royal Hunt’s coming performances may be a case of “remembering the future” – the future when similar music will be composed in Russia again.
We are very happy to see Royal Hunt on our stages. The band under the leadership of a Russian immigrant realized not only its own dream but
also the dream of many of us: “to play not any worse than Deep Purple и Uriah Heep!” Yet again we’ll see that our musicians can play on
the world stage level.
